๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ‘‘ Sprinkled Or Dunked? ๐Ÿฉ

Just as some people believe that doughnuts should be sprinkled with sprinkles,ย and others believe they should be dunked in coffee, so some Christians believeย they should be baptized by sprinkling, and others believe they should beย dunked, or immersed. I personally believe the only mode of water baptism inย Scripture is by sprinkling.

First, while it is popular to say that water baptism is a testimony that hasย nothing to do with salvation, the Bible is very clear that the purpose of waterย baptism is to cleanse men by washing away their sins (Actsย 22:16ย cf. Mark 1:4;ย 16:16; Actsย 2:38). In Scripture, cleansing is often accomplished by sprinklingย (Num. 8:6,7;ย 19:13,18-22), but never by immersion. In fact, God promised theย Jews that after He gathers them back into their land for the kingdom,

โ€œThen will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from allย your filthinessโ€ฆwill I cleanse youโ€ (Ezek. 36:24,25).

We know it is commonly taught that the Greek word baptismos that isย translated โ€œbaptismโ€ in our Bibles means to โ€œdipโ€ or to dunk, but thatโ€™s not so.ย Itโ€™s true that bapto, the verb form of baptismos, means to dip, for thatโ€™s howย itโ€™s translated in Lukeย 16:24. However, dipping is only the beginning of waterย baptism, as we see in Numbersย 19:18:

โ€œAnd a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkleย it uponโ€ฆthe persons that were there.โ€

โ€œHyssopโ€ was a flowery bush that, when dipped in water, was capable ofย absorbing enough liquid to then sprinkle it on people (Heb.ย 9:19). So in waterย baptism, the hyssop was immersed, the people were sprinkled.

We know that those Old Testament sprinklings were baptisms, for baptismosย is the word used to describe those โ€œdivers washingsโ€ (Heb.ย 9:10). Even theย priests were washed (Ex. 29:4) with water from the laver (Ex. 40:11,12) thatย was not used for immersion (Ex. 30:18-21). We know John the Baptist washedย people in the same way, for the Jews didnโ€™t ask โ€œwhatโ€ he was doing, as theyย would if he were doing something new, they asked โ€œwhyโ€ he was doing it (Johnย 1:25). He stood in the Jordan so he could easily dip the hyssop and sprinkleย people. Baptismos is also translated โ€œwashingโ€ in Mark 7:4, and few (if any)ย households in Israel had a receptacle large enough to immerse โ€œtables.โ€

Of course, today our hearts are washed โ€œbyโ€ฆregenerationโ€ (Titus 3:5).ย But while your heart was cleansed in this manner, to cleanse your โ€œwayโ€ (Psa.ย 119:9), you can only do so โ€œby taking heed thereto according to thy Word.โ€ย Letโ€™s take heed! source

And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
