βBut Jesus held his peace, And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemyβ (Matthew 26:63-65).
Did Jesus ever claim to be βGod?β (Why, yes, He did!)
While various denominationalists vehemently reject the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, they still have todayβs Scripture in their Bible versions (and they cannot deny it!). During Jesusβ trial, the high priest commanded Him to declare once and for all if He was βthe Christ, the Son of Godβ (verse 63). Jesus replied, βThou hast saidβ (verse 64)βparaphrased, βYou have said it!β Still, Jesus added: βHereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heavenβ (verse 64). The high priest was immediately outraged: he tore his garments and twice pronounced a charge, βBlasphemy!β
Evidently, what flustered the high priest was not so much Jesusβ reply βThou hast said.β No, what deeply rattled him was that Jesus took it a step further: βHereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.β The Lord did not have to say, βI am the Son of God,β to be accused of blasphemy. No, He merely had to declare, βYou will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.β
βSitting on the right hand of powerβ was surely Messianic, as Psalm 110:1 predicted many centuries earlier that Christ would sit at the LORDβs right hand. Moreover, the βcoming in the clouds of heavenβ was especially inflammatory, as the high priest recalled Psalm 68:4: βSing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH [JEHOVAH], and rejoice before him.β source
