Much is said of the βgreat commissionβ which our Lord gave to His apostles just before His ascension. We wonder whether our readers have ever examined the various records of this commission carefully.
This βgreat commissionβ does not say one word about βthe preaching of the crossβ (I Cor. 1:18) or βthe gospel of the grace of Godβ (Acts 20:24). The βgospelβ which they were sent to preach was very evidently the same βgospelβ they had been preaching β the Gospel of the Kingdom β only they could now declare, as Peter did at Pentecost, that the King had risen from the dead and would still some day occupy the throne of David.
The βgreat commissionβ demanded faith and baptism for the remission of sins (Mark 16:15,16); it included the power to heal the sick and work miracles (Mark 16:17,18), but it did not include the glad message thatΒ βChrist died for our sinsβΒ (I Cor. 15:1-3). At Pentecost, when Peter began to carry out this commission, he rather blamed his hearers for the death of Christ and when, convicted of their sins, they asked: βWhat shall we do?β heΒ did notΒ say: βBelieve on Christ who died for your sins.β He rather commanded them to βrepent and be baptized every oneβ¦for the remission of sinsβ (Acts 2:38).
But after Christ and His Kingdom were again rejected, God interrupted the prophetic program and sentΒ PaulΒ forth to proclaim βthe preaching of the crossβ and βthe gospel of the grace of Godβ. In II Corinthians 5:14-21Β this apostleΒ proclaims βthe love of Christβ who βdied for allβ and instructs us as toΒ ourΒ βgreat commissionβ:
βAnd all things are of [provided by] God, who hath reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ, AND HATH GIVEN TO US THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himselfβ¦ AND HATH COMMITTED UNTO US THE WORD OF RECONCILIATIONβ (II Cor. 5:18,19). source
[β¦] is emphasized by the phraseology found in all five records of the so-called βGreat Commissionβ: Matt. 28:19: βGo ye,β Mark 16:15: βGo ye,β Luke 24:48: βYe are witnesses,β John 20:21: [β¦]
