ββ¦All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men:Β but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto menβ¦Β neither in this world, neither in the world to comeβ (MatthewΒ 12:31,32).
As a pastor, I often hear from people who are afraid theyβve committed the unpardonable sin. They cite these verses, and then proceed to tell me what they said or did that has caused them to believe they blasphemed the Spirit.
When this happens, I remind these dear troubled souls that before he was savedΒ the Apostle PaulΒ was βa blasphemerβ (I Tim.Β 1:13), and it was unquestionably the Spirit whom he blasphemed. As a Jew who followed the Law of MosesΒ scrupulouslyΒ (Phil. 3:6), he would not have blasphemed God the Father, and there is no concrete evidence that he ever evenΒ met God the Son. It wasnβt until the twelve were βfilled withΒ the Holy Ghostβ (Acts 2:4) that Saul showed up and led the blasphemous persecution against them (ActsΒ 7:57β8:3).
So when the Lord said that those who blasphemed the Spirit couldnβt be forgiven βneither in this world, neither in the world to come,β we have to conclude that with the saving of Saul, God introducedΒ a whole new world.Β A world calledΒ βthe dispensation of the grace of Godβ (Eph. 3:2). A world in which graceΒ reigns:
βThat as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our LordβΒ (Rom.Β 5:21).
HowΒ thoroughlyΒ does grace reign? Notice Paul says grace reigns unto lifeΒ as sin reigned unto death. And sin reigned unto deathΒ with absolute sway over men.Β The prophet declared, βThe soul that sinneth,Β it shall dieβΒ (Ezek. 18:4), and there have never been any exceptions! So when Paul says βthatΒ asΒ sin hath reigned unto death,Β even soΒ might grace reignβ to eternal life, you have to conclude that βwhosoeverΒ shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be savedβ (Rom.Β 10:13),Β with no exceptions. This is because whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord is βmade the righteousness of God in Himβ (II Cor.Β 5:21), allowing grace to reign βthrough righteousness unto eternal lifeβ (Rom.Β 5:21).
So if you are among the many who haveΒ agonizedΒ over the Lordβs words in MatthewΒ 12:31,32,Β agonize no more.Β No matter who you are, no matter what youβve said or done, you cannot commit a sin that Godβs grace cannot forgive. You have His Word on it. source
